Auburn enjoys a successful preview

AUBURN, Ala. – With one month into the 2022 season, Auburn’s gymnastics team got a taste of the competition on Friday night at Auburn Arena during their annual preview meet presented by MAX Credit Union.

“We have a really dedicated team who have worked really hard in the offseason”, head coach Jeff Graba noted. “It’s a reward to be in front of so many fans who have come to support us. It was a really exciting night and there is more to come.”

The Tigers performed in front of a large crowd at the Auburn Arena, enjoying the energy brought in by the Auburn faithful.

“It was so much fun”, senior Derrian Gobourne noted. “I really missed the crowd last year. When we get tired the crowd helps us through and that’s what happened tonight.”

Auburn has seen great routines from a multitude of experienced ghosts including Gobourne and the fifth year Drew watson. Watson excelled on her 10.0 jump, while Gobourne showed on bars and floor. In addition, the juniors Aria brusch and Cassie stevens put together a solid overnight overall in the all-around.

The local audience also got to see the future of Auburn’s gymnastics as the five freshmen – Ananda Brown, Sophia Groth, Sara Hubbard, Sunisa Lee, Caroline Leonard – competed in at least two events. Groth also competed in the all-around for the team.

“The energy was incredible tonight,” Lee said. “This team is amazing and we’ve all done so well. We still have things to work on, but I think that sets us up for what the season will be like and I’m super excited.”

“I think everyone did well tonight,” Gobourne added. “We still have some cleanup to do, but we wanted to get out there and think big, show off and engage with the crowds.”

The Tigers are hosting five meetings at Auburn Arena this season, including four against the Southeastern Conference. The team will begin their home game against Iowa State on Jan.21 at 7 p.m. CT. The team also hosts Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri and Florida this season.

Auburn opens the 2022 season on the road, traveling to Chapel Hill, NC for the UNC Quad Meet on January 7. The team will face host North Carolina as well as NC State and Bowling Green.
