Auburn football set to face Virginia in 2022 Gasparilla Bowl

Auburn football may or may not qualify for a bowling game after the 2022 season.

Looking at their schedule, you’d like to think September is 3-1 at worst with a 4-0 chance at home.

Realistically, however, this year’s gauntlet in SEC West will be even tougher than usual given the usual suspect powers (Alabama, Georgia) joined by a Texas A&M team expected to push for a spot in the college football playoffs.

The Aggies are one of the Tigers’ home games and, along with Arkansas and LSU, could push UA to the brink at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Let’s assume Bryan Harsin’s improved culture in 2022 takes Auburn to at least six wins, though. 247Sports is.

In this scenario, the Virginia Cavaliers should be Auburn’s football opponent this coming bowling season:

Gasparilla Bowl

Scheduled match: Auburn vs. Virginia

Will either of these teams get six wins this season? It’s hard to answer at this point. Auburn are a bit of an unknown heading into Bryan Harsin’s second season after the 2021 campaign ended in a losing streak and was followed by months of tumultuous uncertainty. Virginia and freshman coach Tony Elliott are led by quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who is one of the most underrated players in the country.

Auburn football would settle a beef that started on hardwood

Tiger fans don’t have positive associations with UVA due to a phantom 3-point foul call from Kyle Guy and a no-call double dribble over Ty Jerome in the dying seconds for Auburn-Virginia during the 2019 Final Four.

This match would bring two heated fanbases to Tampa, Florida in what would be a battle of lowly Power Five finishes.

It’s not exactly the step up that Tiger fans want, but it would be better than missing out on bowl season altogether. It would undoubtedly be the end of the Bryan Harsin era on the Plains in this case.
