AUBURN, Alabama (WTVM) – Reports indicate Auburn is the fastest growing large city in Alabama. Census data shows the population in 2010 was just north of 53,000. Now it’s over 76,000.
A figure like 10% would be considered solid growth from one census to the next – numbers taken once a decade. For Auburn however, try almost 43%, according to the 2020 census.
“For those of us who have lived here in Auburn, we have seen what has happened here in this community with the new neighborhoods that have come online over the past decade, the size of our school system. , the growth of our business sector. All of this indicates that Auburn is growing as we add a new fire hall and just built a new public safety center, ”said Mayor Ron Anders.
Mayor Anders says Auburn’s growth can be attributed to many different factors and notes that the 2010 census figures may not have been accurate.
“We felt like we had been underestimated in 2010. To see that number be 23,000, we weren’t too surprised. But I’ll tell you a year and a half later because it’s a 2020 figure. We certainly don’t think the growth has stopped, ”he said.
With growth of this magnitude, growing pains can also occur. The mayor says road infrastructure is a major goal for the city.
“Without a doubt, following growth is for me the sign of transport. We must be careful to maintain our road network because it has more and more volume every day and our intersections are more and more congested ”, explained the mayor. “These are expenses the city has prepared well for over the past decade and will be challenges for us as we move forward. “
Mayor Anders says the city is safe and attributes that to large investments and adds that there is another major factor as to why Auburn has grown so much over the past decade.
“It is, without a doubt, our public school system. It has been ranked at the top of Alabama’s public school systems for several generations, ”Anders said.
Auburn has overtaken Dothan in census figures and now holds the title of Alabama’s seventh largest city.
