Auburn Police Investigate Overnight Shooting Death | Crime and courts

Auburn police are investigating a shooting death outside a city bar early Tuesday morning.

According to a press release from the Auburn Police Department, John Wesley Smith III was found dead outside Swifty’s Tavern, 45 Perrine St., after officers responded to a call for gunfire around 1:40 a.m.

Officers said they found Smith, who they described as being in his 30s, lying outside the bar, dead “from an apparent gunshot wound,” according to the statement. After notifying relatives, the APD issued a press release Tuesday afternoon providing details of the investigation and identifying Smith as the victim.

The APD said it concluded that those involved in the incident or likely to have knowledge of it fled the scene before officers arrived. The investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released.

Officers were still outside Swifty as of late Tuesday morning processing evidence. Numerous crime scene evidence markers were visible in front of the tavern and just down the street near an adjacent parking lot.
