Auburn swimmers aim for US Olympic trials

AUBURN, Alabama – Auburn’s swim and dive program will be well represented over the next two weeks at the US Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

Wave I starts on Friday and continues through Monday. Auburn currently has 10 swimmers expected to compete, as well as six members of the 2021 class who signed with the Tigers in November.

The group of women presents second year students Abby Gibbons, Colby injured and Hannah ownbey and also includes Mykenzie Leehy, a transfer fifth-year graduate who recently signed with Auburn from Houston. Freshmen Avery Bargeron and Lexi Mulvihill will also compete in the first wave of the US Trials.

On the men’s side, the current swimmers on the psyche sheet are Ty babinec, Elliott Jones, Reid mikuta, Lleyton smith, Aidan Stoffle and Matthew Yish. They will be joined by signatories Henry Bethel, Jacques Rathle, Andrew Simmons and Nate Stoffle.

In total there will be 16 Tigers swimming in 14 different events at Wave I.

The United States Olympic Swimming Trials have been split into two meetings to allow a smaller number of athletes to be on site amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Swimmers participating in Wave I achieved the original qualifying times from the Olympic Trials while swimmers who achieved a newer and faster qualifying time streak were invited to Wave II.

Guests at Wave II, which runs June 13-20, include Auburn’s Brynn curtis, Emilie Hetzer and Preble Averée. The top two performers from each Wave I event will also win the opportunity to compete in Wave II.

Saturday June 5: 200 free, 100 chest, 400 IM
Sunday June 6: 400 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Back
Monday June 7: 200 IM, 50 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 1500 Freestyle (timed final)
