Betting on the CFP National Championship, a popular business at Atlantis

RENO, Nevada (KOLO) – Alabama or Georgia?

The 2022 National College Football Championship took place on Monday evening and a number of people have come to the Atlantis Sportsbook to try and make some money.

“Looks like it’s going to be a close game. I’m looking for Alabama to take it out at the end, ”said punter Mark Churchman.

Both teams entered the contest with identical 13-1 records.

But one loss carries more weight than the other.

Alabama defeated Georgia 41-24 in the SEC Championship game in December.

The numbers for Monday’s Natty in the book caught the attention of punters. Despite losing 17 to the Crimson Tide, the Bulldogs were a 1.5 or 3 point favorite depending on when someone placed their bet.

Atlantis Race and Sports Director Marc Nelson weighed in on the numbers during pound and line adjustments hours before kick-off.

“Sometimes the results of previous events don’t necessarily match what might happen in the next event,” he said. “Georgia’s defense is very, very good – one of the best ever. We think it’s going to be a lot closer.

The most popular bet was the Alabama money line at plus-135 – meaning that an outright win by the Tide would net the bettor $ 135 for every $ 100 wagered.

“You get a lot of people going out and only making two or three bets a year and they find out that they can make more money on the moneyline than coming back on the points line,” Nelson said.

It’s no secret that SEC powers like Bama and UGA have been part of the headlines game for years.

Nelson wouldn’t say if seeing the same teams over and over again affected business.

“Until someone comes over and beats some of these guys, what are you supposed to do?” They beat the teams that are put in front of them. It’s like that.”

At Atlantis, the popularity of domestic championship betting rivals that of the NBA Finals.
