The Eagles and Jaguars enter this week’s Thursday night game after suffering losses.
Georgia Southern came back from a 24-3 third-quarter deficit against Troy to tie the game with less than seven minutes to go. Unfortunately, the Eagles still lost with a lead with less than two minutes to go.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars went into overtime against Texas State but suffered the same result, a loss due to a late field goal.
Both teams are looking to get out of the basement of their divisions, especially after allowing more than 400 total yards of attack last week.
Will these teams find themselves in another down-to-the-wire game this week? And if so, who emerges as the winner?
Georgia Southern vs South Alabama betting preview
South Georgia Eagles
South Georgia Offense
The Eagles’ passing game cost them last week against Troy.
Quarterback Justin Tomlin struggled, recording three interceptions and not a single touchdown.
But it wasn’t just the passing attack – the most essential part of their offense – the ground game couldn’t even start either. The Eagles were limited to just 82 rushing yards and averaged just two yards per carry.
If the Eagles can’t establish the rushed attack this week against South Alabama, I don’t see them having much luck against the Jags.
Offensively, the Eagles are averaging 380 yards per game and 24.8 points per game.
Southern Georgia Defense
The Eagles’ defense has struggled, so far allowing each opponent to score at least 25 points.
Last week against Troy, the unit allowed them to record 409 yards.
If they start again this week against the Jags, another loss will likely accompany it.
On average, the Eagles are allowing 483 yards and 32.7 points per game.
At the same time, they rank 76th in defensive success rate, 101st in points allowed per practice, 119th in yards per play (7.14) and 120th in yards per passing attempt (9.4).
Southern Alabama Jaguar
South Alabama offense
The highlight of the Jaguars offense is wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, who could very well be one of the best receivers in college football this year.
Tolbert leads the Sun Belt and ranks eighth in the country with 108 yards per game.
As quarterback Jake Bentley completes 66.8% of his passes and ranks third in the Sun Belt with 7.5 yards per pass attempt, he should be able to take advantage of an Eagles team that ranks 128th at the level. national for yards allowed per game.
The Jaguars are averaging 347 yards and 25 points per game.
Southern Alabama Defense
Defense has been the brightest point for the Jaguars.
Opponents are averaging just 20 points and 310.8 total yards per game, with the two placing third in the Sun Belt and top 30 in the FBS.
Southern Alabama is even better in advanced stats, including No. 6 in defensive success rate and No. 19 in points allowed per drive.
Specifically, the Jaguars ‘race defense could be the Eagles’ biggest problem.
While this Georgia Southern team is one of the best ground teams Southern Alabama will see this year, the Jags are limiting their opponents to under 100 yards per game so far.
Limiting the Eagles’ running game is a clear path to victory for South Alabama.

Bet choice Georgia Southern vs South Alabama
South Alabama has never beaten Georgia Southern in seven games in this series.
I think these two teams will come into this game hungry for victory, but they both have one major problem – both defenses compare terribly to the opposing offense.
Georgia Southern ranks outside the top 100 in pass defense, while South Alabama ranks in the top 20 in completion percentage. South Alabama ranks outside the top 50 yards per game, while Georgia Southern ranks in the top 20 for rushes per game and yards per rush.
I don’t have enough confidence in either of these teams to know who will win, but I do know that both teams will be able to score points.
So that’s where I put my money. I have the most at 50 (-110) and I would bet up to 52.5 (-115).
To take: Over 50 (playing 52.5)
