Michigan State University (MSU) head football coach Mel Tucker is set to receive a contract extension that will make him the highest-paid black coach in American sports.
Various outlets announced Wednesday that Tucker, 49, and the Michigan State Spartans will soon sign a new 10-year, $ 95 million contract, worth approximately $ 9.5 million annually. His current contract earns him $ 5.5 million, but a source said Detroit News that MSU began working with Tucker on a new contract after other varsity teams began to show interest in signing it.
It has been reported that MSU may announce the contract extension as early as Thursday.
If the deal goes through, Tucker will become the highest paid black coach of all American sports, whether in college or otherwise. Currently, that title belongs to Stanford Cardinal football team head coach David Shaw, who earns $ 8.9 million a year.
The dollar amounts of these types of contracts even exceed professional leagues. Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers is the highest-paid black NFL coach but earns just $ 8 million a year, a number matched by highest-paid black NBA coach Doc Rivers of the Philadelphia 76ers.
In addition to becoming the highest paid black coach, Tucker could also win a number of other accolades, such as becoming the highest paid coach in the Big Ten Conference.
Additionally, Tucker would become the second highest paid coach in all of college football, behind Nick Saban of Alabama Crimson Tide. Saban, a former MSU coach himself, earns $ 9.7 million a year.
“[Tucker has] and we have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of student applications after his victories, âsaid Rema Vassar, MSU board member. The Detroit News. “He rejuvenated us, our alumni and donors. He brought us back from COVID and united us.”
Part of Tucker’s new contract would be funded by two MSU alumni.
One of them, Mat Ishbia, is a former member of the Michigan State basketball team and has already donated $ 32 million to the college’s athletic department. The chairman of a major mortgage company, Forbes says Ishbia’s net worth stands at $ 6.7 billion.
Hired in 2020, Tucker helped bring the Spartans back to glory after a number of mediocre seasons, and MSU is currently 9-1 with a 6-1 record in the Big Ten. The team is currently ranked # 7 in the Top 25 in the AP poll.
Their only loss of the season came on Nov. 7 when the unranked Purdue Boilermakers earned a surprise 40-29 victory.
