The Michigan Wolverines increased their odds of winning the national championship on Saturday in sports betting nationwide, going from long range shots to top contenders after their resounding Ohio state uproar.
The Wolverines handled the Buckeyes 42-27 in the snow at The Big House, earning a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and dropping from 50-1 to 10-1 in Caesars Sportsbook’s chances of winning the National Championship. Only Georgia, the odds favorite, and Alabama had better national title odds than Michigan late Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines entered the season at 100-1 and lost some of their shine after a narrow loss to Michigan State in late October. On Saturday, the betting public – including Michigan players – overwhelmingly sided with the favorite Buckeyes. At Caesars Sportsbook in Michigan, 95% of the money wagered on the in-game spread was in Ohio State.
A spokesperson for bookmaker PointsBet told ESPN that Michigan’s anger at the Buckeyes produced the bookie’s biggest win in a college football game this season.
There were some savvy Wolverines fans, however, who made the point spread dramatically increase over the weekend and in the hours leading up to kick-off. The Buckeyes, who could reach the favorites at 9 points during the week, closed as consensus favorites at 6.5 points. Bets on Wolverines from influential clients made the line narrower, several sports bets told ESPN.
Caesars Sportsbook reported taking a bet of $ 275,000 on Michigan +8.5 earlier in the week, and BetMGM tweeted on Saturday that a bettor had placed a bet of $ 200,000 on the Wolverines to win directly at +250 odds. The bettor won $ 500,000 net.
Michigan’s performance also bolstered Heisman’s chances of defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who had seven tackles, including three sacks against the Buckeyes. Hutchinson, who was not previously on the list, had the third best chance of winning the Heisman Trophy at 7-1 on Saturday at DraftKings.
