Birmingham’s Hailey Adams is in Texas this week, competing for the title of Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2023.
Adams, who was crowned Miss Alabama‘s Outstanding Teen 2022 in March, is one of 51 young women vying for the national crown. The title comes with a scholarship, as well as a one-year reign.
Preliminary rounds began Wednesday and continue Thursday in Dallas. The final will take place on Friday, August 12 at the Landmark Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Dallas, 300 Reunion Blvd. (Live streams of the teen preliminaries and finals are available via WatchMissAmerica.compriced at $60 for all three events.)
Marcelle LeBlanc, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2022, will crown her successor in the finale. LeBlanc, an actress and singer from Birmingham, won the national title in July 2021, while competing as Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teenager.

Contestants for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2023 also have rehearsals, public appearances and other events on their schedule this week.
Adams, who assists Evangelical Christian School in Alabaster, performed a dance routine to “Proud Mary” during the state competition, and will dance again (routine and song TBD) during the talent portion of the national competition. Her philanthropic platform, or “social impact initiative,” is Hailey’s HUGS – The Fight Against Pediatric Cancer. Adams is a finalist for the Social Impact Award in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen pageant, according to the Miss Alabama organization.
Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen is affiliated with Miss Alabama, and girls who participate in Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen often drop by the Miss Alabama pageant. Lindsay Fincher, Lauren Bradford and Tiara Pennington, the last three Miss Alabama winners, competed in the teen pageant.
Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen was founded in 2003 and has crowned 21 winners to date. Two winners from Alabama, LeBlanc and Jessica Baeder, became Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. You can see photos of all of the Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen winners in the gallery at the top of this post.
To note: When a state title holder wins the national crown, the first runner-up takes over as Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teenager for the remainder of her reign. Emma Terry, for example, rose to the winning spot at the state level when LeBlanc won the national championships. Lauren Bradford, the first runner-up in 2017, also assumed the state title as a teenager, when Jessica Baeder was named Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.
