Rosa Parks Annual Breakfast is February 5 – The Atmore Advance

The 14th Annual Rosa Parks Breakfast will be held Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 9 a.m. at Greater Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.

The breakfast, sponsored by the Yellow Hats Society, is held annually to celebrate the contributions of Parks and other prominent African Americans to history. Parks was an American civil rights activist best known for her role in the Montgomery bus boycott.

On December 1, 1955, Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake’s order to give up his seat to a white passenger in the colored section after the whites-only section had been filled.

Parks’ prominence in the community and his willingness to become a controversial figure inspired the black community to boycott Montgomery buses for more than a year, the civil rights movement’s first major direct action campaign after -war.

Breakfast coordinator Lillie Johnson said those in attendance should have proof of vaccinations upon entry. Anyone 60 and over is welcome as long as they are vaccinated, she said.

Johnson said masks are required at breakfast. Masks will be provided for those who don’t have them, she said.

The Rosa Parks Award, as well as the Trailblazer Award will also be presented, Johnson said.

Breakfast is free, Johnson said.
