S&P Global Market Intelligence Ranks Top Performing Community Banks and Credit Unions for 2021

New category introduced to include top performing U.S. public banks

NEW YORK, March 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — S&P Global Market Intelligence has released its annual rankings of 2021’s top performing community banks with assets between $3 billion and $10 billion, community banks with assets under $3 billion, and credit unions. the most efficient. The organization also introduced a new category – America’s Top Performing Public Banks – which ranks the financial performance of publicly traded banks with more than $10 billion of total assets at the end of 2021.

S&P Global Market Intelligence launched the ranking over a decade ago to assess the performance of community banks and credit unions. The division ranks institutions based on returns, growth and efficiency, but places great importance on the strength and risk profile of balance sheets.

Merchant’s Bank ranked first among American public banks with more than $10 billion in assets. the Carmel, Ind.based bank, which had $11.28 billion of assets at the end of 2021, was also among the top three in the 2019 and 2020 rankings of community banks by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Total merchant operating revenue has grown by at least 21% annually since 2017 and that performance was a key driver of the bank’s 2021 rankings.

Hingham Institute for Savings earned first place among the best performing community banks with assets between $3 billion and $10 billion. the Hingham, massbased bank, which had $3.43 billion in assets at the end of 2021, outperformed the sector median in all six measures of the ranking methodology and its efficiency ratio of 20.82% was the lowest achieved among the group’s top 50 banks.

Samson, Ala.-based Samson Banking Co., tops the list of community banks with less than $3 billion in assets. Founded over 90 years ago, Samson Banking operates two physical branches in Alabama and surpassed the median of the top 100 in all six ranking metrics. The bank’s interest income on commercial and industrial loans more than quadrupled to $1.4 million in 2021, which helped boost the company’s operating revenue by 87.4% last year.

Philadelphia Police and fire fund was the top performing credit union this year for the second year in a row. The 83-year-old credit union outperformed the industry median in all five ranking metrics in 2021, with its total loans and leases jumping nearly 20% last year to $5.84 billion.
