University of Alabama launches Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food campaign

The University of Alabama tries to beat Auburn University in all forms of competition, but no competition has a greater impact on the community than the annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive.

The 27th annual campaign kicked off on Friday at the AU campus and will run through November 18.

“This year we hope to break 300,000 pounds of (collected) food,” said Olivia Hannum, president of the food drive, kinesiology graduate. “We are competing with Auburn University to see who can collect the most food donations as well as monetary donations for our respective food banks. Everything we get goes to the West West Food Bank. Alabama.”

The West Alabama Food Bank serves Tuscaloosa, Greene, Fayette, Hale, Lamar, Sumter, Pickens, Marion, and Bibb counties.

All Auburn donations from the Beat Bama food drive go to the East Alabama Food Bank.

In 2020, the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger campaign raised 291,047 pounds of food in a year heavily impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

“Last year we couldn’t do such things and interact with students to encourage them to get involved. Food insecurity in our state is still affected by the pandemic. Food insecurity is at an extremely rate. high, ”Hannum said.

Donations can be made in bins both on and off the UA campus. In addition to canned foods, shelf-stable foods like peanut butter, crisps, pasta, rice, lentils, canned milk, and oatmeal are needed. Donation barrels can be found on the AU campus, the Tuscaloosa Public Library, the YMCA, and several churches in the area.

Additionally, there is an online donation page where anyone can donate directly or on a student’s page. People can also donate to the West Alabama of West Alabama Venmo Account.
